What kind of courage do you need to face the truth about toxic relationships that reveal a family pattern going back generations? And then write a memoir about your journey? That's what Kadian Grant shares in this interview.
Episode #5 of Creative Courage Live features Kadian Grant, author of “Leaving a Charmed Life: A True Story of Choosing Authentic Happiness.”
We taped this video on September 15, 2023, at a live book launch party so that we could celebrate Kadian's author journey and her memoir. If you ask me, it was joyful.
We covered such topics as:
Becoming an author when you didn’t even know you were writing a book to begin with.
How her book has two main characters, Kadian and Charm, the antagonist and protagonist of her storybook life.
What Kadian learned about the women in your life and her hopes for the next generations of women and men.

The difference between eradicating generational patterns and the idea of ancestral healing?
Kadian’s unique ideas is about “embodied horizons” and how to look for our own.
One of my favorite lines in her whole book: “Show me happiness, God. Show it to me.”
The amazing Jamaican ackee fruit that’s on the cover, because there’s a metaphor and it goes back to happy memories.

It Takes a Village — Thank You!!
Thank you to everyone who made Kadian’s book launch such a success by being there in person and online. First, to everyone who bought Kadian’s book already, THANKS!! Thanks to Megan Reynolds for all the party planning, detail implementing, and graceful way you made it all happen with a welcoming smile, and even more behind the scenes work! Thanks to Kadian’s children, Kamilah, Khaleel and Kyra, for your fierce love and support, rallying the day-one Amazon push and setting up the Instagram and Facebook Live cameras, the music, and so much more. Thank you to the area Toastmasters colleagues who showed up to cheer us on, including Sherri Rase for manning the Zoom chat and making sure Kadian’s microphone was actually in the proper location, and to Ainsley Reynolds for your photography. Also, many thanks to Simo for your videography.
Check out Kadian’s Instagram page for a recent reel with more party pics and to stay tuned as her author journey unfolds.
Request Kadian’s Book from an Indie Bookseller
Another highlight of my trip back East to meet Kadian was having the chance to visit local independent bookstores, including Harriett’s Bookshop in Philadelphia and The Head & The Hand. (I was taking pics at the stores as part of a #fallintoindiebooks challenge from the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). You might have seen my posts on Instagram.) On Saturday after the launch party, we went to two stores in New Jersey where they will be stocking Kadian’s book and offering author events: Little Boho Bookshop in Bayonne, NJ, and Source of Knowledge, which is Newark’s oldest Black-owned bookstore. All these stores have a great story behind them. Check them out!
