What good is leaving generational wealth
when you and your loved ones are stuck in generational traumas?
That is the defining question that Kadian Grant poses in her debut memoir, Leaving a Charmed Life: A True Story of Choosing Authentic Happiness. Her book’s subtitle poses its own question to us readers, whether or not trauma is present:
How are you choosing authentic happiness?
What does happiness look like in your life?
Kadian describes reaching a moment in her adult life when she was asking herself these questions too:
Why aren’t people happy?
Why can’t I find my life purpose and feel passionate about anything?
Why can’t I get up every day smiling?
What does intimacy feel like and why don’t I have it in my marriage?
She writes, “The antagonist of our story will trigger our own provocative questions, compelling us to bend our own necks back in search of what’s beckoning us.” And then she describes seeing all the material evidence of her charmed life:
I awoke one morning in 1995 with my seven-hundred-dollar designer handbag staring me in the face. I was repulsed by its presence. I gaped at my bedroom and its expensive furniture with repugnance. I wandered around my home, looked out at my yard, and loathed everything I had. The things in my life were pathetic replicas of happiness. And my unhappiness unmasked their true representation. No magic existed anywhere in my home because I lived in a beige house. Happiness can’t be inauthentic.
Kadian’s next paragraph is an invitation to ponder our own questions.
I made myself a cup of tea and sat in my living room to let the awareness soak in. What I desired was deeper and beyond my scope of understanding. Right then, I made a commitment to investigate this new perspective.
What questions are you asking yourself about your perspective on authentic happiness?
As Kadian begins to investigate all aspects of her life, we see how she faces the reality of depression and how her relationship with her mother is impacting everything. At times heartbreaking and infuriating, with equal parts awe-inspiring, Leaving a Charmed Life shows how one woman’s quest to understand her soul’s plan took her back generations to see how toxic patterns develop and how they can be faced and healed.
